Recently, our Grade 3 students have been exploring the Unit of Inquiry (UOI) “Who We Are,” learning about culture, identity, and diversity through different experiences and stories. This time, the learning extended beyond the usual classroom experience as eight families joined us to share their cultures and personal stories with the students.
Parents introduced students to cultures from South Korea, Canada, Italy, Malaysia, Jamaica, Guyana, Germany, and different regions of China, sharing everything from geography, ethnic groups, and languages to traditional clothing, music, food, games, and everyday life. Through these stories and experiences, culture became more than just a concept in the classroom—it became something students could see, hear, taste, and experience.
And it wasn’t just about listening. Parents brought culture to life through interactive experiences. Students viewed photos, watched videos, tasted foods and treats from different places—from candies and breads to maple syrup—played traditional games, explored cultural objects, and even learned words and phrases in different languages.
These experiences helped students move from simply knowing about different cultures to developing a deeper understanding of them. By sharing who we are and learning about one another, students began to see a bigger world—one filled with different traditions, perspectives, and ways of life.
At AXIS, we believe our differences give us opportunities to learn from one another, build understanding, and grow together.
